Symbiotex

A new brand identity for an innovative biomaterials company
The Opportunity

After seeing the extent of single-use medical plastic waste whilst on placement in the NHS, Olivia Simpson founded SymbioTex. She discovered that every year in the UK alone 73 million inhalers are distributed and only 0.5% ever get recycled. SymbioTex is a solution which uses the valuable resource seaweed to create a truly home compostable and biodegradable material that offers a sustainable alternative to many rigid plastics used for packaging within the medical and cosmetic sectors.

As brand founder and CEO, Olivia approached me to design a brand identity for SymbioTex which would announce their groundbreaking solution to the sector, and communicate the founder’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion to contribute towards a better tomorrow.

The Identity

My key point of inspiration for the visual identity were close-up scans of red algae found in scientific texts.

Giving this a contemporary and colourful twist, I developed a set of seaweed illustrations which help to instantly communicate the key material at the heart of SymbioTex’s mission to turn a readily available natural component into a valuable resource.

I then paired this with a bold and assured logo with the brand name presented in uppercase. The letter O can be used as a standalone icon, a nod to the ocean’s important role on our planet in helping us to discover transformational solutions to combat climate change.

I worked with the SymbioTex team to develop a suite of materials to help tell the story of the brand, including presentation decks, stationery, social media assets, promotional flyers and banners along with a new website which helps to tell the story of the brand and how they set out to disrupt global plastic production with their truly sustainable material. I feel privileged to have helped the passionate and dedicated team launch their brand at the start of their exciting journey.

Lindsay did a full brand identity for our start-up SymbioTex - this included both physical and digital assets; pitch decks and presentations, schematics, website, business cards, leaflets, zap stands. We had some ideas of what we wanted and gave Lindsay our story but put our trust entirely in Lindsay and she more than delivered! Lindsay has a wealth of experience in brand design for an array of businesses but our business is a B2B sustainable manufacturing business - certainly a niche! Lindsay understood our business and she tailored the assets specifically around this. So much thought around end users goes into her work; she is so talented! We couldn’t be happier with how professional our business looks and that we have assets we can use going forward thanks to our brand toolkit. It has given us more confidence when speaking to large companies and the design itself is so empowering. I highly recommend Lindsay - she is passionate and cares, spends time to understand you and the business and this reflects in the brand design.
